Ken Barrie, the actor and singer who provided the voice of Postman Pat, has died aged 83. A family member told the BBC that Barrie had died at his home in Uxbridge, west London, following a short battle with cancer. As well as lending his voice to the titlle character, Barrie voiced numerous other characters on the popular '80s kids' TV show, including farmer Alf Thompson and handyman/inventor Ted Glen. He also sang the show's theme tune, which spent 15 weeks on the UK singles chart in 1982, peaking at Number 44. He returned as the voice of Postman Pat when the much-loved animation was revived in the '90s and then again in the early '00s. Barrie, who was born Leslie Hulme, also sang the soundtrack for another popular '80s children's TV show, Charlie Chalk, and provided the singing voice of actors including Larry Hagman in numerous movies. Before he found success as a voice actor, he enjoyed a brief career as a skiffle singer using the stage name Les Carle. He was married to wife Doreen, whom he married in 1954, until her death in 2009. He is survived by their daughter Lorraine; their other child, son Paul, having passed away in 1998.
